Cherokee's Tall Task: Slowing down the North Cobb ground game

Writer: Arthur MosleyArthur Mosley

Scouting the Warriors (Cherokee)

The Cherokee Warriors fell to .500 last week after giving Walton all they could handle; untimely turnovers did the Warriors in. Cherokee will likely need to win one of their last two games to qualify for the playoffs. Once again, they were able to move the football as the offense accounted for 408 total yards, but also turned the ball over 4 times in the game. They will have to clean that up this week. By now, we know the usual suspects for the Warriors on offense. Quarterback Tanner Savasir continues to lead Class 6A in passing yards with 2,231 yards. He’s also thrown 20 TDs. Tight end Wyatt Tash is Savasir’s leading receiver with 30 receptions for 568 yards and 4- TDs. Tash is also the state’s top receiving tight-end in terms of receiving yardage. The Warriors really spread the ball around as six different receivers have caught at least16 passes. Defensively, Jayce Jones has intercepted six passes this year.

Scouting the Warriors (North Cobb)

The North Cobb Warriors can secure a playoff spot with a win this week. They are the prohibitive favorite, having already defeated Walton earlier in the season. North Cobb does most of their damage on the ground as they are averaging over 265 yards per game rushing this season. The rushing attack is led by Zach Belyeu (695 yards, 8-TDs), Arquevious Echols (447 yards, 8-TDs) and quarterback Nick Grimstead (447 yards, 7-TDs). Grimstead has also thrown for 1,051 yards and 12-TDs and has not thrown an interception this season. Steele Ingram leads North Cobb with 23 receptions for 542 yards and 7-TDs. The Warriors are averaging 40.8 points per game and allowing 20.5 points per game.

Pundit's Pick

Both of these teams have had success on offense this season, averaging over 400 yards of total offense per game. The onus will be on the defensive coordinators to try to find a way to slow down the opposition. For Cherokee, will they be able to slow down the ground game and force North Cobb into throwing the football. Meanwhile, can the North Cobb defense nd a way to slow down one of the best quarterbacks in the state? We believe that Cherokee will keep this game close throughout, but North Cobb’s ability to run the ball with three different backs will be the key. Warriors, (from North Cobb) by 8.
