Scouting the Greyhounds

The Pope Greyhounds dropped last week’s region game against Woodstock and now have their backs against the wall with playoff hopes in jeopardy. The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick start over Woodstock last week, but were not able to keep pace late in the first half and into the second half. The Greyhounds have one of the top receivers in the state, but last week, senior John Stuetzer was only able to muster 15 receiving yards. Pope was able to gain 195 yards on the ground last week. Running the ball has been their calling card as of late, as they are averaging 196.1 yards per game on the ground. Pope is averaging 24.8 points per game. Defensively, they are allowing 34 points per game. The Greyhounds have sacked opposing quarterbacks 12 times, with Nick Chao leading the way with 6.

Scouting the Grizzlies

The Creekview Grizzlies are in a similar predicament as their opponent this week. Their backs are against the wall as they fight for their playoff lives. The Grizzlies fell to Sprayberry last week and fell to 2-2 in region play. Creekview’s offense is averaging 26.7 points per game, but they have been held to 21 points in their last two contests. Creekview had their second best outing passing the ball last week as they threw for 238 yards, conversely, they also had their worst performance rushing the ball, as they were held to 68 yards on the ground. Brant Freeman and Ryan Brooks continue to lead Creekview in total tackles.

Pundit's Pick

Both of these teams are better when they can control the line of scrimmage and run the football. The Grizzlies can’t lose sight of Pope’s talented receiver, Stuetzer, as he is still one of the best in the state. That’s a tall task for the Creekview secondary. Pope has not lost back to back games all season. But that changes this week as we beleive Creekview keeps the Pope ground game in check. Grizzlies by 8.
