Scouting the Eagles

The Etowah Eagles look to bounce back this week after falling to Marietta a week ago and suffering their first region loss of the season. Despite the setback, Etowah’s running game continues to be a strength, led by Kingston Ceaser, who rushed for 199 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Quarterback Zeke Douglass added 110 yards on 12 carries and also found the end zone twice.

On the season, Etowah is averaging 151.9 yards per game through the air and 246.7 yards on the ground. Douglass has thrown for 1,046 yards while adding 519 rushing yards, accounting for 19 touchdowns. Ceaser continues to enjoy a breakout season, rushing for 853 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging more than 11 yards per carry.

Walker Hughes and Nick Pacini continue to pace the Eagles’ receiving corps. Hughes has caught 30 passes for 431 yards and five touchdowns, while Pacini has hauled in 12 receptions for 250 yards and three scores.

Defensively, Shemarion McClaurin leads the way with 59 total tackles and ranks second on the team with six tackles for loss. He also leads the Eagles with three sacks and nine quarterback hurries. Donovyn Pollard leads the team with eight tackles for loss while recording 27 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. As a unit, the Eagles have forced 11 turnovers and recorded nine sacks this season. Etowah is averaging 39.4 points per game while allowing 31.2.

Scouting the Wolfpack

The North Paulding Wolfpack have now knocked off all the prohibitive favorites in the region race. With an overtime upset of North Cobb last week, the Wolfpack stand alone atop the region standings. Etowah is the only team with a winning region record standing between North Paulding and a region title.

The Wolfpack have been impressive behind quarterback Braden Stark, a first-year starter who has thrown for 1,249 yards and six touchdowns. Bryson Niehr remains his primary target, hauling in 25 receptions for 394 yards and four touchdowns. Pressley Carr (21 receptions, 279 yards) and Parker Jordan (11 receptions, 198 yards, one touchdown) have also helped pace the passing attack.

North Paulding has relied on a running-back-by-committee approach this season, with Darien Smith (240 yards, one touchdown), Steve Agbor (187 yards), Gavin Clark (190 yards, six touchdowns) and Michael Blocker (76 yards, one touchdown) all carrying the ball more than 20 times. Stark has also contributed 125 rushing yards.

Defensively, Kemudirim Ozurumba leads the Wolfpack with 31 solo tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Wesley Rakestraw leads the team with 47 total tackles and is tied for second on the team in tackles for loss. North Paulding has been particularly disruptive up front, recording 32 sacks this season. The Wolfpack are averaging 23.1 points per game while allowing just over 14 points per contest.

Keys to the Game

Etowah

  • Establish Kingston Ceaser: Coming off a 199-yard performance, Ceaser must find running room against a North Paulding defense that has recorded 32 sacks.

  • Utilize Zeke Douglass: Douglass’ dual-threat ability will be key to keeping the Wolfpack defense off balance.

  • Win on First Down: Etowah must avoid obvious passing situations and limit North Paulding’s pass-rush opportunities.

North Paulding

  • Contain the Ground Game: Slowing Ceaser and Douglass is critical to stopping Etowah’s explosive offense.

  • Pressure the Quarterback: Kemudirim Ozurumba and the Wolfpack pass rush must disrupt Etowah’s offensive rhythm.

  • Protect Braden Stark: North Paulding must give Stark time to find Bryson Niehr and the passing game against an Etowah defense that has recorded nine sacks.

Pundit's Pick

After a slow start to the season, North Paulding has found its groove. The Wolfpack have recorded two shutouts, and their defense has been menacing throughout the season. Etowah, meanwhile, has been explosive offensively, setting up a compelling matchup between one of the region’s most productive offenses and one of its toughest defenses.

Something has to give Friday night.

Etowah is entering the most daunting stretch of its schedule, and the Eagles could present North Paulding with one of its toughest offensive challenges yet. Despite last week’s result, we believe Etowah can remain competitive if it continues to run the ball effectively and control the tempo.

However, we don't anticipate a high-scoring affair. North Paulding’s defensive front has consistently disrupted opposing offenses, and we believe the Wolfpack will find a way to slow down the Eagles’ ground game enough to take control.

Prediction: North Paulding by 10.
