Scouting the Eagles

The Etowah Eagles will look to close out their regular season with a win and secure a bid to the postseason. The Eagles fell to the North Cobb Warriors last week. Etowah showed improvement defensively, but North Cobb got off to a fast start and was able to hold off the Eagles down the stretch.

Etowah rushed for 241 yards last week, led by Kingston Ceaser with 127 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Zeke Douglas added 87 yards on the ground. On the season, Etowah is averaging 135.2 yards per game through the air and 245.4 yards per game on the ground.

Ceaser has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, currently sitting at 1,054 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Douglas has been a dual-threat weapon for the Eagles, throwing for 1,200 yards, rushing for 735 yards and accounting for 22 total touchdowns. Speedy receiver Walker Hughes continues to lead the Eagles' receiving corps with 33 receptions for 460 yards and six touchdowns. Hughes has also been a major weapon on special teams, averaging 44.6 yards per kickoff return and returning four kickoffs for touchdowns.

Defensively, the Eagles continue to be paced by Shamarion McLaurin, Ben Gebhardt, Carter DeWitt and Bryson Graves. Etowah is averaging 34.7 points per game while allowing 34.6 points per game.

Scouting the Raiders

The Walton Raiders have already secured a playoff berth but will look to improve their postseason seeding with another victory to close out the regular season. Walton is averaging 33.8 points per game, generating 247.8 yards per game through the air and 147.9 yards per game on the ground.

Quarterback Christian Peacock has thrown for 2,191 yards and 22 touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing with 755 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Raiders feature two proven threats in the passing game in Aiden Opore (51 receptions, 887 yards, 8 touchdowns) and Jordan Peacock (38 receptions, 707 yards, 7 touchdowns).

Defensively, the Raiders are allowing 26.1 points per game. Christian Lavette leads the team with 76 total tackles, four tackles for loss and one sack, while Caelin Leslie has added 73 tackles and two tackles for loss. Walton has recorded seven sacks and forced 12 turnovers this season.

Keys to the Game

Etowah

  • Establish the ground game: Kingston Ceaser and Zeke Douglas need to continue their production and control the tempo against the Walton defense.

  • Get Walker Hughes involved: Hughes is a big-play threat at receiver and on special teams. Etowah needs to find ways to get the ball in his hands and take advantage of his explosiveness.

  • Win the turnover battle: Etowah needs to protect the football and take advantage of opportunities to create extra possessions.

  • Get defensive stops: Shamarion McLaurin, Ben Gebhardt, Carter DeWitt and Bryson Graves must find a way to slow down Walton's balanced offensive attack.

Walton

  • Let Peacock make plays: Christian Peacock is the engine of the Walton offense. His dual-threat ability will be critical to keeping the Etowah defense off balance.

  • Utilize the receiving threats: Aiden Opore and Jordan Peacock give Walton two dangerous weapons in the passing game. Finding ways to get them involved will be important.

  • Win the battle up front: Christian Lavette and Caelin Leslie need to lead the defensive effort and limit Etowah's productive ground game.

  • Create turnovers: Walton needs to put pressure on the Etowah offense, force mistakes and create extra possessions.

Pundit's Pick

Etowah finds itself right on the playoff bubble and needs a win to strengthen its postseason hopes. The Eagles will need to continue leaning on the ground game of Ceaser and Douglas, while Walker Hughes will need to make an impact both at receiver and on special teams. Meanwhile, Walton will look to lean on Christian Peacock and his playmaking ability, both through the air and on the ground, while taking advantage of its receiving threats.

This game has the makings of a back-and-forth contest. We believe Etowah has the offensive firepower to keep pace with the Raiders, but Walton's balance and playmaking ability should allow the Raiders to pull away late in the fourth quarter.

Prediction: Walton by 8.
