First Win Up for Grabs in Pope–Cherokee Showdown

ree

Scouting the Greyhounds

The Pope Greyhounds return home Friday night still searching for their first win of the season. It’s been a trial by fire early for Pope as junior quarterback Hudson Marinko takes over the offense. Marinko has shown poise in the pocket and the arm strength to stretch the field, but his real value has come from his ability to spot mismatches in coverage and deliver the ball accurately on intermediate routes. That could prove crucial as the Greyhounds try to balance their attack.

Veteran running back Ethan Alterman (402 yards, 1 TD in 2024) provides steady leadership in the backfield, but freshman Ivan Darden, Jr. has been the early workhorse. Darden’s quick first step and willingness to lower his shoulder have made him an immediate factor in Pope’s ground game, and the Greyhounds are expected to feature him again this week. Look for Pope to open with a heavy run focus to establish tempo, then allow Marinko to take selective deep shots to loosen up Cherokee’s secondary.

Scouting the Warriors

The Cherokee Warriors are also winless after two weeks and looking to bounce back following last week’s loss. Starting quarterback Sawyer Ray exited early with an injury, giving way to freshman Zack Parker, who showed flashes despite limited prep time. Parker will get the start this week. for the Warriors.

Offensively, the Warriors have leaned on running backs Brandon Hamilton and Tory Hearn, Hearn runs with a downhill style that wears on defenses while Hamilton has game breaking spead. Their success will hinge on Cherokee’s offensive line winning at the point of attack and creating consistent push. When they take to the air, Jack Rubin provides a reliable possession target while King Belin can stretch defenses vertically.

Defensively, Cherokee is anchored by linebacker Kayson Simmons, whose range and tackling ability will be vital in slowing Pope’s rushing attack. Expect the Warriors to crowd the box and challenge Marinko to win through the air. After giving up a handful of big plays last week, Cherokee’s secondary will need tighter coverage discipline to avoid breakdowns.

Pundit's Pick

This game is likely to come down to the wire, with special teams potentially playing a pivotal role. Cherokee struggled in that area last week, so expect improvements after practice focus this week. Both teams are still integrating young and inexperienced players across the board. In a close matchup, we believe the Warriors will bounce back behind a strong offensive line and edge Pope on the road. Expect a nail-biter.

Prediction: Cherokee by 1.
