Scouting the Grizzles
The Creekview Grizzlies begin the 2024 season at home on Friday night against a familiar foe. While the Grizzlies say goodbye to a large senior class from a year ago, they do return their dual threat quarterback Austin Guest. Guest combined for over 2,700 yards of total offense last season and crossed the thousand yard mark in both rushing and passing. He loses his top receiver from a year ago, but does return Jackson Stanley who was second on the team in receptions in 2023. We also expect for Nathan Agyemang and Nick Vaccaro to help pick up the slack at receiver. The Grizzlies also return their second leading rusher, Mason Munn (615 yards, 4-TDs in 2023). Up front, Fernando Zurita, Brayden Grantham and Charlie Counts will set the table along the line of scrimmage. On the defensive side of the ball, we expect for lineman Kevin Meade, line backers Ryan Brooks and Brant Freeman, and safety Andrew Hammond all return and will look to take a more prominent role stopping opposing offenses in 2024.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
The Calhoun Yellow Jackets will visit Owens Store road for the second time in school history. The Yellow Jackets missed the playoffs for the first time in 23 seasons last year and we can be certain that they will be eager to get back on track. The Jackets will have a new signal caller in sophomore Cross Land. The sophomore quarterback has a big arm and we expect him to rise up the recruiting rankings this season. Tight End Emaree Winston (a UT-Austin commit), will certainly be one of Land’s top targets. We also expect for Makadan Griffin and Justin Beasley to factor in to the Calhoun passing game. On the defensive side of the ball, we expect the aforementioned Winston to step in at defensive end along with Sager Quin. Meanwhile, Alec Upshaw should be primed for a breakout season at linebacker. The junior has a tireless motor and is very disruptive.
Pundit's Pick
Creekview will need find a way to establish the ground game and defensively they will have to find a way to get pressure on Calhoun’s quarterback. For Calhoun, they will need to protect their young QB and give hime a clean pocket to work from. If they do that he can really show off his passing talents. Both of the previous games have been closely contested and we believe this game should be very similar. Something tells us look out for Calhoun and that they might be on a revenge tour this season after missing out on the playoffs last year. We like the Jackets by 3 in another tightly contested matchup.
