Sequoyah hosts Woodstock as the Chiefs try to derail the upstart Wolverines

Writer: Arthur MosleyArthur Mosley

Scouting the Chiefs

The Sequoyah Chiefs started off October on the right foot as they downed Lassiter last week after being off for back to back weeks. Sequoyah tallied 411 yards of total offense in the win as Kolby Martin completed 68.7% of his passes for 212 yards and one passing TD. Junior running back Will Rajecki also rushed for 100 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on the ground. On the season, Sequoyah is now averaging 169.3 yards per game through the air and 191 yards per game on the ground. The Chiefs are averaging 35 points per game. Meanwhile, the defense bounced back, limiting Lassiter to 6 points last week, as they sacked the Trojans signal caller 5 times. Sequoyah has sacked opposing quarterbacks 17 times this season, as Ean Marria (5) and Matthew Matz(4) lead the way. The Chiefs are allowing 21.6 points per game.

Scouting the Wolverines

The Woodstock Wolverines kept their hopes for a home playoff game alive last week as they came from behind to defeat Pope. It was the third straight win for the Wolverines as they keep pace with Sprayberry, (as both teams are in a tie for second place). Woodstock is averaging 34.8 points per game. They will bring a balanced attack into Skip Pope Stadium, averaging 175.9 yards per game through the air and 196.6 yards per game on the ground. Sophomore Graham Burmeister has now thrown for 1,190 yards and 13-TDs with just 3 interceptions in 133 pass attempts. Isaiah Peyton continues his break out season, as the senior has now rushed for 726 yards and 6-TDs. The Wolverines defense is allowing 14.5 points per game. They’ve also forced 12 turnovers on the year and sacked opposing quarterbacks 18 times.

Pundit's Pick

This game has serious playoff implications, as both of these teams need to win out to stay in the hunt for either a region title or a home playoff game. Both teams have a balanced offensive attack, so the real question will be which team can contain the other. Sequoyah’s defense will need to contain a speedy Isaiah Peyton and also limit the big plays that Woodstock’s offense has been able to generate. Meanwhile, Woodstock’s defense will have to slow down the hard running of junior  Will Rajecki. The x-factor for Sequoyah might be the trio of Noah Givens, Maddox Waller and Brooks Darling as the receivers might have a slight advantage over the Woodstock secondary. We expect to see plenty of points scored in this game and we believe Sequoyah will find a way defensively to keep Woodstock in check late in the game. Chiefs by 12.
