Scouting the Wolverines
The Woodstock Wolverines are looking to build on their success from a season ago as they won two games in 2023 including the all important battle of Towne Lake. Coach Devine’s upstart Wolverines will be breaking in a new starting quarterback as the Graham Burmeister era begins. Burmeister, a crafty southpaw, will have the teams leading receiver, Chase Colina back to help him settle in. Expect Will Furstein and Justin Yearout to also factor into the passing game. Isaiah Payton led the Wolverines in rushing last season and returns for his senior season. Defensively, the Wolverines might return the most talented linebacking trio with Drew Burmeister, Cooper Price and Kaheem Davis. This linebacking sqaud will also be backed up be Tyer Barbera who provides much needed experience in the secondary.
Scouting the Eagles
The Etowah Eagles will look to finally break through this season after being on the precipice of the playoffs in the last two season. The Eagles are hoping to have the services of quarterback Xavier Mahoney, who is one of the most electrifying players in metro-Atlanta. Etowah will return experience at the receiving position with Will Zazara, Malone Pesquera and Davinci Allen. The Eagles will have some big shoes to fill at running back as Walker Hughes seems to be the heir apparent for the Eagles at that position. Meanwhile on the defensive side of the ball, Etowah might boast the best secondary in the county. They will be led be players like the aforementioned Allen, Cain Moss, Ethan Weidner, and Brody Hendrix. The Eagles will rely heavily on linebackers Grant Griffith and Jason Pertz-Moye to back up a young definsive line.
Pundit's Pick
With the battle of Towne Lake being played in Week-1, we expect that both of these teams will be fired up and ready to play when the lights come on Friday night. For Etowah, we know what to expect from Mahoney, but can they establish a ground game outside of the quarterback. Meanwhile, we have heard some really good things out of Woodstock around their quarterback. The biggest question is how he will handle the pressure of Friday night on a big rivalry game. We expect this game to go down to the wire again, but we give the edge to the upstart Wolverines. Woodstock by 3.
