Wolverines, Wolves Look to Break Through in Region Showdown

Scouting the Wolverines

The Woodstock Wolverines found themselves in a ballgame Friday night as they searched for their first win of the season. Still playing without starting quarterback Graham Burmeister, the Wolverines leaned on their defense, which rose to the occasion once again by holding the Grizzlies scoreless in the second half.

Through their first five games, Woodstock is averaging 118 yards per game on the ground. Zay Murphy has been the bell cow in Burmeister’s absence, recording 255 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, the Wolverines are allowing 33.8 points per game but turned in one of their best performances of the season last week, surrendering just 13 points. Caleb Vigna continues to lead the team with 58 total tackles and nine tackles for loss. Meanwhile, Djabril Ba leads the Wolverines with 10 tackles for loss and ranks third on the team with 45 total tackles.

Scouting the Wolves

The Rome Wolves have struggled to find consistency throughout the season. They have shown flashes of potential but have yet to get over the hump. Last week, the Wolves gave the Kell Longhorns all they could handle before Kell managed to pull away with the victory.

The story has been similar throughout the season for Rome. The Wolves are an athletic team, but youth at several key positions has made it difficult to put everything together.

Rome is averaging just 9.6 points per game while allowing 34.5. Quarterback Zaiden Winston will need to deliver a big performance, and he has a couple of playmakers at receiver in Tylan Simpson and Kaiden Watters. The Wolves will also need A’zyuis Adams and Jy’Quice McCrary to find a way to pressure Woodstock’s quarterback and disrupt the Wolverines' offensive rhythm. If Rome can generate pressure defensively and find some production on offense, the Wolves will have an opportunity to pick up their first win.

Keys to the Game

Woodstock Wolverines

  • Establish the ground game behind Zay Murphy and control the tempo.

  • Continue the defensive improvement shown last week.

  • Protect the quarterback and avoid costly turnovers.

  • Turn scoring opportunities into touchdowns rather than settling for empty possessions.

Rome Wolves

  • Get a big performance from Zaiden Winston and the passing game.

  • Generate pressure and force Woodstock into difficult passing situations.

  • Find a way to slow Murphy and limit the Wolverines' rushing attack.

  • Finish drives and avoid the mistakes that have kept the Wolves from breaking through.

Pundit's Pick

Both teams desperately need a win, and Friday presents an opportunity for one of them to finally break through. Each squad came close to finding success last week, but both will need to learn how to finish the job.

The game plan is straightforward for both sides: pressure a young, inexperienced quarterback, shut down the ground game and force the opposition to become one-dimensional. With both offenses searching for consistency, we expect a low-scoring, physical football game in which every possession matters. Woodstock's defense has shown signs of improvement, but Rome has enough athleticism to make the difference in a close contest. We expect the Wolves to find a way to finish this one.

Prediction: Rome by 4.
