Woodstock Looks to Rebound at Home as the Woodland Wildcats come calling Friday night

Scouting the Wolverines

Heartbreak is the only way to describe Woodstock’s loss last week in the Battle of Towne Lake. But the Wolverines must move on quickly as they return to the friendly confines of the Wolverine Den searching for their first win of the season.

The silver lining from last Friday may be the emergence of a new offensive weapon. Linebacker Trace Washington, already known as a disruptive force on defense, made the most of his opportunities at running back, scoring two rushing touchdowns — including a 69-yard sprint in the first half. His presence in the backfield should provide much-needed balance and take pressure off dual-threat quarterback Graham Burmeister. Burmeister accounted for two touchdowns in the rivalry loss — one through the air, one on the ground — and showed flashes of the dynamic playmaking ability Woodstock will need to lean on all season. As Washington grows into his role, expect the Wolverines’ offense to become more versatile and explosive.

Scouting the Wildcats

Woodland enters Week 2 with plenty of motivation of its own after a disappointing home loss. The Wildcats are ssearching for their first win under a new wave of youthful talent. Sophomore quarterback Sammy Ray made his first start last week, tossing a touchdown and showing poise in a tough situation. This week, h'ell once again look to tight end Korbyn Jarrett as a reliable target in the passing game. On the ground, Woodland will try to establish shifty running back Solomon James early. James has the ability to break big runs if he can get into space, which could help keep Woodstock’s defense honest.

The Wildcats’ biggest priority on defense will be tightening up their pass defense after giving up three touchdowns through the air last week. If they can limit Burmeister’s explosive plays and keep Washington from controlling the tempo on the ground, Woodland will have a chance to stay within striking distance.

Pundit's Pick

Both teams enter this game hungry for a rebound, but in different ways. Woodland is younger across the board and faces the challenge of playing on the road with limited varsity experience. Woodstock, on the other hand, is more seasoned but must prove it has mentally moved on from last week’s rivalry heartbreak. The Wolverines can’t afford to let Etowah beat them twice — first on the scoreboard, and again by lingering in their heads.

We expect Woodland to come out energized early, while Woodstock may start slow as it works through any emotional hangover. However, the Wolverines’ experience, depth, and home-field advantage should eventually take over. Look for Washington to continue his breakout at running back, giving Burmeister a reliable ground threat to open up the passing game.

Prediction: Wolverines by 19
