Chiefs Eye Fourth Straight County Title and Deep Playoff Run: 2025 Sequoyah Chiefs Football Preview

ree

Over the past three seasons, Sequoyah High School has set the standard for football in Cherokee County. The Chiefs haven’t lost to another county opponent since Oct. 22, 2021, amassing a 14-game win streak in local matchups.

Now entering the 2025 season, Sequoyah is favored to remain atop Cherokee County and challenge for the Region 6-5A championship. With a strong returning roster and proven coaching staff, the Chiefs have their sights set on their deepest playoff run since 2018.

2025 Sequoyah Football Schedule: Balanced Road and Home Slate

The Chiefs open with a challenging non-region slate against Denmark, Cherokee and Kell—three programs with different styles and strengths, particularly on offense.

The region schedule is evenly spaced, with no more than one home or away game in a row. The final four weeks will be the toughest stretch, including road games against Woodstock, River Ridge and Creekview.

Offensive Preview

Sequoyah returns most of its offensive production from 2024, with the main departures being running back Ean Marria and athlete Taiwo Ogundele.

Up front, the offensive line is a strength. Junior Brody Craig holds multiple Group of Five offers, and a P4 offer from West Virginia, while senior Alex Brewer, a three-star prospect, has committed to Colorado State.

Quarterback Kolby Martin is the most experienced signal-caller in Cherokee County. He recently committed to Georgia Tech for baseball but remains a key leader under center. Running back Will Rajecki, a three-star Memphis commit, is coming off a 2,000-yard, 25-touchdown season and is expected to shoulder even more of the workload in 2025.

The receiving corps is deep and experienced, with Brooks Darling, Jack Ripley and tight end Maddox Waller all returning. The Chiefs averaged 37 points per game last season, a number unlikely to drop.

Defensive Preview

While the offense is loaded, the defense must replace several key pieces. Graduates Ogundele, Marria, Carter Ligetti and Spencer Geist leave sizable gaps, particularly on the defensive line.

The secondary remains strong, with Carson Bahry, Benji Smith and Brooks Darling back in the fold. The linebacking corps is experienced and physical, led by Drew Williams, Tanner Davis, Michael Fountain and Noah Wilson.

The defensive line will be the unit to watch. Returners Matthew Matz and Cason Gantt each tallied four-plus sacks last season and will be counted on for more production. If the line gels quickly, Sequoyah’s defense should remain formidable.

Season Expectations: Championship Aspirations

Sequoyah enters 2025 as the favorite to win a fourth consecutive Cherokee County championship and contend for its first region title since 2003. The combination of returning talent, offensive firepower and experienced coaching staff positions the Chiefs for a potential deep playoff run.

If the defensive front develops early, Sequoyah could be one of the most complete teams in Georgia Class 5A this fall.
