Scouting the Chiefs
The Sequoyah Chiefs will begin their season on the road as they travel to neighboring Forsyth county to face Denmark, (a team they are somewhat familiar with as they have scrimmaged the Danes over the last two years). Sequoyah will return 3 year starter Kolby Martin at quarterback. The junior signal caller helped to lead the Chiefs to a second round playoff run last season. He will be joined in the backfield with Ean Marria and Will Rajecki. These two backs made for a great change of pace duo a year ago. Carter Ligetti, Kehn Ogundele and Alex Brewer will lead the way for the ground dominant Chiefs along the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile on defense, Matthew Matz, who was second on the team in sacks, returns along the defensive line and we expect him to continue where he left off last season. The aforementioned Ean Marria will also return on the defensive side of the ball where he was a menacing force to opposing offenses as he racked up a team leading 12 sacks last season. The Chiefs might have one of the fastest linebackers in the county as Taiwo Ogundele returns for his senior season. Ogundele led the team in tackles for loss and was also second in total tacklesin 2023.
Scouting the Danes
The Denmark Danes start the 2024 season looking to make another playoff run as they have advanced to the post season for the previous sfive seasons. If they are going to make a run, they will need Matthew Baer to step in and fill the void at quarterback. Baer is slated to take over as the Danes signal caller. The lefty has plenty of skill players around him including all region running back Noah Laban, who is a speedy running back that has shown the ability to leave defenders floundering in his wake. Baer will also have the luxury of return experienced receivers like Dylan Brozena, Carter Rollins and Michael Palmieri. Defensively, Kamden Jennings has seen his stock rise this off-season, as the defensive back might be one of the fastest players on the field on Friday night. Dalton Tallant and Colby French will also be looked upon to lead the front seven for the Danes.
Pundit's Pick
This game will feature two contrasting styles as the Chiefs have historically been a run first and run often team, while Denmark will look to spread the Chiefs out and create havoc through the air. Will the Chiefs experienced defensive line and line backers be able to get pressure on the Danes quarterback? We believe that will be the key to the game. We like Sequoyah to keep the game close with their ball control offense, but expect for Denmark’s team speed and experience at wide receiver to be the difference. We like the Denmark by 5.
