Friday night brought another intense inter-county matchup in Cherokee County as Creekview traveled to face Woodstock in a key Region 6-5A contest. Both teams entered battling for playoff positioning, and the Grizzlies took the field in throwback helmets honoring the early days of their program. By the end of the night, Creekview walked away with a dramatic road win to stay unbeaten in region play.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Alex Penrod powered in for an 8-yard touchdown rush, giving Creekview a 7-0 lead with 5:37 left. The first quarter ended with the Grizzlies holding that advantage.
In the second quarter, the offenses came alive. Graham Burmeister connected with Trace Washington for a 47-yard touchdown strike, tying the game at 7-7. Creekview answered quickly as Penrod found Jackson Shirley on a 64-yard touchdown pass, though the PAT missed, leaving the Grizzlies up 13-7. The Wolverines responded when Burmeister hit Nathan Kellner for a 33-yard touchdown, pushing Woodstock ahead 14-13 with 4:43 remaining. Just before halftime, Burmeister and Washington linked up again, this time on a 66-yard pass to extend the lead to 21-13. Rylan Hubbard added a defensive highlight with an interception to close out the first half in Woodstock’s favor.
The third quarter saw both defenses tighten. Washington recovered a fumble for the Wolverines with 4:27 left in the period, but neither side found the end zone, and Woodstock carried a 21-13 lead into the fourth.
The Grizzlies mounted their comeback in the final frame. Penrod scored on a short touchdown run and added the two-point conversion, tying the game at 21 with 9:38 left. Then, with less than a minute to play, Penrod connected once more with Shirley, this time for a 54-yard touchdown pass that gave Creekview a 28-21 lead with just 57 seconds left.
Woodstock had one last chance, but Creekview’s defense held firm. The Grizzlies secured a 28-21 victory, remaining undefeated in region play and strengthening their push for the postseason.
