Scouting the Eagles
The Etowah Eagles will look to get into the win column this week after suffering a season opening loss to county rival Etowah. The Eagles have turned to sophomore quarterback Zeke Douglass to run the offense as their electrifying quarterback appears to be out for an extended period of time. Douglass showed pretty good pocket presence for the Eagles in last week's contest. The onus for this week and the rest of the season will be on the offensive line to continue to provide the young quarterback time to settle in. Douglass does have experienced receivers in Malone Pesquera and Will Zazzara that should help lighten the load. Etowah’s defense did a respectable job last week, forcing a red zone turnover and keeping the Eagles within striking distance for most of the game. They will need to continue that trend this week as an explosive Sprayberry team comes calling.
Scouting the Jackets
The Sprayberry Yellow Jackets are poised to have a breakout season and make a run at a region title. Most of the pieces seem to be in place for this Jackets team in 2024. Sprayberry returns junior quarterback Jaden Duckett who might be flying under the radar, but trust us when we say this young man is a problem. Duckett is a dual threat quarterback with nice touch on his deep ball and also can get to his top speed when he scrambles very quickly. While Duckett presents problems for opposing defenses, the Sprayberry defense might by one of the toughest units in their region this season. Led by linebackers Jamarion Cooper and Everett Currie and a secondary led by Missouri commit Mark Manfred and 4-star prospect Jorden Edmonds, Sprayberry has the speed and experience to make each Friday night difficult for the opposition.
Pundit's Pick
In order for Etowah to defend the nest, we believe they will have to find a way to run the football to keep Sprayberry off balance. Defensively, Etowah will also need to make Sprayberry one dimensional. Perhaps the achilles heal of Sprayberry at this point in the season is at running back. They lost an all-region performer last season at the position to graduation. Our key to victory for the Jackets, pretty similar to Etowah’s; make the opposition one dimensional. We expect Etowah to keep it close for a half, but beleive that Sprayberry’s team speed will be the difference. Jackets by 14.
