Experience Gives Eagles a Chance to Surprise: 2026 Etowah Football Preview

The Etowah Eagles entered the 2025 season with a young roster, a new coaching staff and one of the most difficult schedules in Cherokee County.

Despite those challenges, Etowah showed encouraging signs and gained valuable experience throughout the year. The Eagles now return a large number of contributors on offense, along with a coaching staff entering its second full offseason with the program.

That continuity could make Etowah one of the county’s most experienced teams in 2026. With an established quarterback leading the offense and several younger players prepared to take on larger roles, the Eagles have the potential to become one of the region’s surprise teams.

2026 Etowah Football Schedule: Fast Start Will Be Critical

Etowah opens the season on the road in the Battle of Towne Lake after last year’s meeting produced an instant classic.

River Ridge and Roswell round out the Eagles’ non-region schedule, giving Etowah three important early opportunities to build momentum before region play begins.

The Eagles will ease into the region schedule to some extent. Paulding County, Cherokee and Wheeler are the first three region opponents before Etowah reaches the more difficult portion of its schedule.

Road trips to North Cobb and Marietta loom later in the season, presenting two of the Eagles’ toughest challenges.

Under the new PSR playoff format, Etowah cannot afford a slow start. The Eagles began last season with early momentum, and a similar opening in 2026 would place them in a strong position for a playoff spot as the schedule becomes more difficult.

Offensive Preview: Douglass Leads Experienced Unit

Etowah’s returning experience is most apparent on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Zeke Douglass took over the starting role as a sophomore and has led the offense for the past two seasons. Last year, Douglass threw for nearly 1,500 yards and rushed for more than 700 yards while accounting for 18 total touchdowns.

His experience and dual-threat ability give Etowah one of the more established quarterbacks in the region.

Wide receiver Walker Hughes also returns after leading the Eagles with more than 650 receiving yards last season. Hughes should once again be Douglass’ primary target and one of the offense’s most reliable playmakers. Combined with Nick Pacini, the Eagles have a strong combination of pass-catching options.

The biggest skill-position question is in the backfield.

Etowah has several players capable of earning carries, but it remains unclear who will emerge as the primary running back when the season begins. Finding a dependable option would take pressure off Douglass and allow the Eagles to maintain a more balanced attack.

The offensive line was young last season, and many of the same questions remain in 2026. Etowah must develop greater consistency up front, particularly against the stronger defensive fronts on its schedule.

If the Eagles can establish stability along the offensive line and identify a lead running back, their experience at quarterback and receiver should allow them to compete in difficult matchups.

Defensive Preview: Eagles Must Replace Significant Production

Etowah’s returning experience is less apparent on the defensive side of the ball.

The secondary must be rebuilt following the graduation of Cain Moss and Phoenix Caesar. Their departures leave the Eagles searching for new leaders in the defensive backfield.

Hughes could see situational snaps in the secondary in addition to his offensive role. Safety Brandon Stewart is another name to watch after returning an interception for a touchdown during Etowah’s spring game.

The Eagles also face major questions at linebacker.

Replacing the production of Oliver Creigh and Drake Mason will be a difficult task. Bryson Graves and Dalton Quick are among the players expected to step into larger roles and help fill the void left by two of Etowah’s most productive defenders.

Much like the offensive line, the defensive front remains one of the team’s biggest uncertainties.

Defensive tackle Wyatte DeMarco and Edge Donovyn Pollard appear ready for an expanded role and could become important pieces of the Eagles’ front. Etowah will need DeMarco and several other younger players to develop quickly against a region filled with physical rushing attacks.

Season Expectations: Etowah Could Be a Region Surprise

Etowah is one of the more unpredictable teams in Cherokee County entering the 2026 season.

The Eagles’ offensive experience provides plenty of reason for optimism. Douglass is an established quarterback, Hughes is a proven receiver and several other contributors return after gaining valuable experience last season.

That group gives Etowah the potential to become one of the surprise teams in the region and possibly Class 7A.

However, the amount of defensive production that must be replaced cannot be ignored. The Eagles need new contributors to emerge at every level of the defense, particularly in the secondary and linebacking corps.

The opening three games could determine the direction of Etowah’s season.

If the Eagles can earn a couple of early victories—or at least remain competitive without suffering damaging losses—they should enter region play in a strong position to contend for a postseason berth.

Etowah has enough offensive firepower and returning experience to remain in the playoff conversation. How quickly the defense develops will determine whether the Eagles can turn that potential into a successful 2026 campaign.
