Scouting the Wildcats
The Wheeler Wildcats kept their hopes alive for a home playoff game as they came from behind last week to defeat Cherokee. Most of that was due to a stingy defense in the second half and another outstanding performance by senior running back, Josiah Allen. Allen rushed for 256 yards and 2-TDs to help power the Cats a week ago. We’ve mentioned before that Wheeler’s offense is predicated on running the ball. Allen leads the way with 1,111 yards on the season and 9-TDs. As a team, Wheeler is averaging 233.9 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback Marcus Romain is the team’s second leading rusher with 412 yards and 4-TDs. Defensively, Wheeler is allowing 27 points per game. Defensive End Kobe McInnis leads the team with 13 tackles for loss and 11 quarterback hurries.
Scouting the Eagles
The Etowah Eagles dropped a game to North Paulding last week, after leading for 3 quarters, but could not find an answer in the final frame of the ballgame. Etowah is averaging 13.8 points per game and allowing 31.4 points per game. The young Eagles once again proved that they can compete in one of the tougher regions in Class 6-A, but they are still learning how to close out football games. The 4th quarter has really been a bugaboo for Etowah as they’ve led or been within one score in 3 of their 6 losses this season.
Pundit's Pick
Etowah’s run defense will certainly be tested this week as Wheeler will feed them a steady diet of Josiah Allen. Perhaps the best bet is to load the box and force the Cats to throw the ball. That’s easier said than done against a physical back like Allen, with a physical offensive line. If Etowah can get their ground game going, they can certainly test this Wheeler ball club. Once again, we believe Etowah keeps this game close in the first half, but too much rushing attack from Wheeler. Cats by 17.
