The 2025 season was largely a successful one for the River Ridge Knights, even if it ended without a playoff appearance.
Wins over Denmark and Sequoyah showed that River Ridge was capable of competing with some of the strongest teams on its schedule. However, close losses to Creekview and Woodstock ultimately proved costly, with both defeats coming by less than a possession and costing the Knights a playoff spot.
The Knights finished with a winning record but were left outside the postseason. Under the new PSR playoff system, that same type of season would likely have resulted in a playoff berth.
Now, River Ridge enters 2026 looking to build on last year’s success, avoid the costly close losses and return to the postseason.
2026 River Ridge Football Schedule: Knights Embrace County Competition
River Ridge deserves special recognition for constructing a schedule that allows the Knights to face all five of their Cherokee County opponents.
The Knights will open the season against a familiar opponent in Sprayberry before hosting Etowah and Cherokee to round out the non-region portion of the schedule.
Those early matchups should provide River Ridge with a strong measuring stick before entering Region 6-6A play.
The region schedule will challenge the Knights immediately.
River Ridge opens region play on the road against Sequoyah, a team the Knights defeated last season. Later in the year, River Ridge will face perhaps its most difficult stretch when Rome and Kell appear in back-to-back weeks in October.
With the new PSR format rewarding the total body of work, River Ridge’s schedule provides plenty of opportunities to strengthen its playoff résumé.
Offensive Preview: Lockerman Returns to Lead Knights
River Ridge returns quarterback Hunter Lockerman for his senior season, providing the offense with valuable stability at the most important position.
Lockerman threw for more than 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns last season and will once again be asked to lead the Knights through a difficult Region 6-6A schedule.
In the backfield, Micah Pugh is expected to take over the primary running back role following the graduation of Camden Cox.
Pugh has been a productive contributor over the past two seasons and finished 2025 with more than 450 rushing yards and three touchdowns. With a larger workload coming his way, he should become an even bigger part of the River Ridge offense.
The receiving corps will experience the most turnover.
Athlete Andrew Rowe and Noah Gaddis both saw limited offensive opportunities last season but should take on expanded roles in 2026. Hudson McKoy is another name to watch and gives Lockerman another big-bodied target in the passing game.
The offensive line will also be in transition.
Caleb McKamey and Oliver Thomas return to provide experience, while newcomers such as Maurice Belt have shown significant upside and could earn important roles up front.
How quickly that unit develops will play a major role in determining the ceiling of the River Ridge offense.
Defensive Preview: Knights Will Rebuild
River Ridge will feature a dramatically different defense after losing its top three tacklers from last season.
The centerpiece of the returning unit is cornerback Andrew Rowe.
Rowe earned a three-star rating during the offseason and committed to Georgia State, where he is set to join former River Ridge teammate Grant Hollier. He led the Knights with four interceptions last season while also recording 45 tackles.
His presence gives River Ridge one of the more proven defensive backs in the region.
Bryce McFarland will also return to the secondary after recording seven tackles for loss last season. His ability to make plays behind the line of scrimmage could make him an important piece of the Knights defense.
The biggest changes will come at linebacker.
River Ridge is still working through what the final rotation will look like, but several younger players could earn significant opportunities.
Madden Hernandez and Brodey Dixon are among the names to watch, while tight end Luke Thompson could also see snaps at linebacker as the Knights search for the right combination.
The talent is there, but River Ridge will need several inexperienced defenders to develop quickly.
Season Expectations: River Ridge Should Be Back in the Playoff Picture
River Ridge missed the postseason last year for the first time since 2021 despite finishing with a 7-3 record.
Under the new PSR playoff system, the outlook changes significantly.
A winning record in a region as competitive as Region 6-6A should put the Knights in a strong position to qualify for the postseason. Because of that, River Ridge enters 2026 with a legitimate expectation of returning to the playoff bracket.
The bigger question is how high the Knights can climb.
Lockerman gives River Ridge an experienced quarterback, Pugh provides stability in the running game and Rowe gives the defense a legitimate playmaker in the secondary.
However, the offensive line and the rebuilt defense remain the biggest question marks.
If River Ridge can find answers in the trenches and quickly develop its new defensive contributors, the Knights should be able to compete with the top teams of the region.
A return to the playoffs should be the expectation. How far River Ridge can go once it gets there will depend on how quickly its younger pieces come together.
