
Cherokee County's version of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate lived up to the name as Sequoyah and River Ridge went toe to toe in one of the more physical games we've seen this season.
The first quarter saw Sequoyah's Ean Marria put Sequoyah on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run, putting the Chiefs on the board with a 6-0 lead. Unfortunately for Sequoyah, the PAT was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 6-0 with 2:42 remaining in the quarter. As the quarter concluded, Sequoyah held a narrow 6-0 advantage.
The second quarter began with Sequoyah extending their lead. Kolby Martin connected with Ean Marria on a 5-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful 2-point conversion, executed by Jackson Hancock's rushing score. The Chiefs led 14-0 with 9:58 left in the quarter.
River Ridge swiftly responded, with quarterback Ethan Spector finding Thomas Thompsen for two consecutive 9-yard touchdown passes on back to back drives. The Knights leveled the score at 14-14 with1:24 remaining in the second quarter.
The third quarter unleashed a flurry of scoring. Will Rajecki powered through for a 3-yard touchdown rush, regaining the lead for Sequoyah at 21-14 with 9:22 left in the third quarter. However, River Ridge answered almost immediately with a remarkable 61-yard touchdown pass from Spector to Grant Hollier, tying the game at 21-21 with 8:45 remaining in the third quarter.
Spector continued to showcase his prowess, connecting with Thompsen for a third time for an 8-yard touchdown pass, putting River Ridge ahead 28-21 with 3:44 left in the third quarter.
Kolby Martin led the Chiefs with a 1-yard touchdown rush, followed by a successful PAT, tying the game at 28-28 with 2:41 left to play.
Sequoyah's defense held strong in the final minutes, preventing River Ridge from mounting a comeback. The Chiefs seized the opportunity, and it was Kolby Martin's 1-yard touchdown run that sealed the victory for Sequoyah, making it 35-28.
River Ridge falls to 3-3 on the season, and 1-1 in region play. They will prepare to take on the Creekview Grizzlies (5-1, 2-0) next week.
Sequoyah Improves to 4-2 and 2-0 in region play. They will host Rome (5-1, 2-0) next week in the season's biggest test to this point.
