The Battle at Tommy Baker Field carried extra meaning on Friday night, as it marked the final season Cherokee will play at the historic venue before moving to their new stadium. It was also a milestone night for Sequoyah head coach James Teter, who earned his 98th career win since taking over the Chiefs — the most in both Sequoyah program history and among all coaches in Cherokee County history.
The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone. Brooks Darling hauled in a big reception to set up Will Rajecki, who powered in for a 6-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter. Moments later, quarterback Kolby Martin kept it himself for a 1-yard touchdown dive, extending the lead to 14-0. The Chiefs weren’t done yet — Jack Ripley capped the explosive first quarter with a bobbling 18-yard touchdown grab from Martin, stretching the lead to 21-0 with 1:57 left. Sequoyah led 21-0 at the end of the first.
The second quarter belonged entirely to the Chiefs as well. Brayden Wilbur found the end zone from a yard out to push the margin to 28-0. Then Ripley struck again, his second touchdown of the half, putting Sequoyah ahead 35-0. The defense joined the surge when Michael Fountain recovered a fumble, setting up Rajecki for another short touchdown run and a 42-0 advantage. On the next possession, Logan Pichon added a rushing touchdown, and after a missed PAT, the Chiefs were in full control at 48-0. Special teams added the exclamation point before halftime when Asa Goings blocked a punt that rolled into the end zone, giving Sequoyah a commanding 55-0 lead at the break.
With the game well in hand, the Chiefs added one more score in the second half. Brody Vance broke through for a rushing touchdown late in the third quarter, extending the margin to 61-0. The defense closed the night with Braylon Bannister grabbing an interception early in the fourth, sealing Sequoyah’s dominance.
The final score was Sequoyah 61, Cherokee 0, as the Chiefs delivered one of their most complete performances in recent memory. For Coach James Teter, it was a historic win that cemented his legacy atop Cherokee County’s all-time coaching ranks. For Cherokee, it marked a difficult farewell stretch to Tommy Baker Field, with the Warriors set to move into a new home stadium next season.
