The Creekview Grizzlies are gearing up for an exciting new season, seeking redemption after finishing last year with a 4-6 record. It was the first time the Grizzlies had a losing record since 2016. Although they faced some challenges on the road, the team demonstrated resilience and lost four games by less than one possession. With minimal coaching changes and several key returning players, the Grizzlies are determined to improve their performance and make their mark on the field.
Offense:
Led by quarterback Austin Guest, the Grizzlies' offense showed promise last season. Guest displayed solid numbers, completing 58% of his passes for 1,514 yards and six touchdowns, with five interceptions. He also showcased his mobility, rushing for 494 yards and five touchdowns. With another year of experience under his belt, Guest is poised to lead the team's offensive charge.
The running back position will see a complete overhaul, with a new group of players aiming to fill the shoes of the departed Isaac Hubert. Mason Munn, Tristan McWilliams, and Nigel Agyemang are among the candidates expected to step up and provide the necessary ground attack for the Grizzlies.
The offensive line has always been a strength for the Grizzlies, and 2023 looks to be no different. Cam Mears, Pierson Sears, and Andrew Rosinski will all be returning for their senior seasons. Rosinski, pegged as a three-star tackle, committed to North Carolina at the beggining of the year. His experience and talent along with Mears and Sears will give Creekview a strong and expereinced fondation to build around.
In the receiving corps, Cal Schubert emerged as a reliable target last season, recording 27 receptions for 376 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Stanley also contributed with 20 receptions for 239 yards. With their experience, these receivers will be crucial in generating offensive production.
Michael Roach, the team's tight end, proved himself as a reliable option last year, making 11 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown. His ability to create mismatches and contribute in both the passing and blocking game will be vital for the success of the Grizzlies' offense.
Lee Brock, an exceptional athlete, made an impact in multiple positions last season, including 12 receptions for 112 yards. Additionally, he contributed on defense with 58 tackles, one tackle for loss, and an interception. His versatility and playmaking ability make him a key asset for the team.
Defense:
The Grizzlies' defense held their ground last season, allowing an average of only 17.1 points per game. One standout player on the defensive side of the ball is middle linebacker Reed Anderson. Anderson's impressive stat line from last season includes 84 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and four sacks. His leadership and ability to make impactful plays will be crucial in anchoring the defense.
Josh Tuten, a talented defensive back, demonstrated his prowess last year with 26 tackles and five sacks. His ability to disrupt passing plays and pressure opposing quarterbacks will be vital in keeping the Grizzlies' defense strong.
Outlook:
The Grizzlies' close losses last season indicate that they have the potential to compete at a higher level. Learning from those experiences and with the returning players' improved chemistry, Creekview High School can become a formidable force in region 6-6A. The key to their season is learning to win on the road.
The Creekview Grizzlies are set to embark on a new season with aspirations of reclaiming their winning ways. With key returnees and talented players across the roster, they have the tools to make a statement. By capitalizing on their close losses from the previous season and bolstering their offensive output, the Grizzlies are well-positioned for a strong comeback.
