Soaring to New Heights: A 2023 Football Season Preview of The Etowah Eagles

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

The Etowah Eagles are looking to build on last year after finishing with a 5-5 record. While they started strong with a 4-0 record, they faced challenges during region play, going 1-5. With no coaching changes and a talented roster, the Eagles are determined to build on their successes and improve their performance on the field.

Offense: Led by quarterback Xavier Mahoney, the Eagles boast one of the most dynamic playmakers in Cherokee County. Mahoney's ability to make electrifying plays both through the air and on the ground makes him a formidable threat. His leadership and skill set will be vital in driving the Eagles' offensive attack.

The offensive line for Etowah will undergo significant changes from last year, with four of the five starters having graduated. Tate Nelms, returning for his senior season, will provide the Eagles with much-needed experience as a foundation to build upon. Etowah fans can take solace in the fact that Head Coach Matt Kemper specializes in offensive line play, which bodes well for the team's development up front.

Reece Wehr, known as "The Buffalo," anchors the running back position for Etowah. Wehr's powerful running style and determination make him a force to be reckoned with on the field. His ability to break tackles and gain tough yards will be crucial for the Eagles' ground game.

The wide receiver corps of Ethan Weidner, Mason Mancini, Malone Pesqueira, and Will Zazzara provide a talented and versatile group of playmakers. Their combined skills in route-running, hands, and speed will create numerous opportunities for the passing game. They will be instrumental in the Eagles' offensive success.

Defense: On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Joshua Harding leads the way for the Eagles. Harding's presence in the middle of the field is formidable, and his ability to read plays and make impactful tackles will be crucial in slowing opposing offenses.

Dravin Cole anchors the defensive line, bringing strength and tenacity to disrupt the opposing offensive schemes. Cole's ability to penetrate the line of scrimmage and apply pressure on the quarterback will be vital in creating turnovers and stopping the passing game. His physicality and relentless pursuit make him a key component of the Eagles' defensive unit.

The Eagles are replacing both cornerbacks from last season, making the defense a bit of a question mark for fans heading into the fall.

Outlook: With a consistent coaching staff and a group of talented players, the Etowah Eagles are poised to soar to new heights this season. Learning from their experiences last year, particularly during region play, the team is focused on improving their performance and achieving success in crucial matchups.

The Eagles' offensive performance, averaging 22.9 points per game, shows promise. However, there is room for improvement, particularly in finding consistency throughout region play. Defensively, the team allowed an average of 28 points per game, and they will be looking to tighten up their defense, especially against teams that run the ball well.
