Scouting the Wolverines
The Woodstock Wolverines broke into the win column last Friday with an emphatic 33–7 victory over Woodland (Cartersville), bouncing back from an emotional Week-1 defeat. Woodstock started slow, but found their stride, capitalizing on defensive stops and timely big plays on offense to seize momentum and never look back.
Quarterback Graham Burmeister turned in another strong performance, directly accounting for four touchdowns — three through the air and one on the ground — and now sits at 409 passing yards and four passing TDs through two games. Burmeister’s command of the offense continues to grow each week, showing poise under pressure and the ability to extend plays outside the pocket. His favorite target against Woodland was Adrian Holliday, who hauled in two touchdown passes and gave the Wolverines a reliable downfield threat.
The biggest development offensively may have been the emergence of Xavier Murphy in the run game. Murphy rushed for a career-high 108 yards and a touchdown, helping Woodstock achieve the balance that head coach Devine has emphasized since the offseason. If Murphy can replicate that production, it will make play-action opportunities even more dangerous for Burmeister and his receivers.
Scouting the Spartans
The North Springs Spartans return to action after an early bye week, following a Week-1 loss to Holy Innocents where they struggled to sustain drives. The Spartans had a bye week last week, and we anticpate that they used the week off to fine-tune their offense and may look to open things up with more spread formations. Miles Jackson is the centerpiece of the attack — a versatile athlete who can line up at quarterback or wide receiver and produce explosive plays from anywhere on the field. He’s complemented by Bradley Jackson, a two-way contributor who rushed for 308 yards last season and led the team with nine receptions, giving North Springs an experienced and dependable playmaker.
While the Spartans were a ground-oriented team a year ago, they are expected to work more out of the shotgun in 2024 to create space for their athletes and diversify their attack. However, roster depth remains a concern, particularly if the Wolverines can push the tempo and make the Spartans defend sideline-to-sideline for four quarters.
Pundit's Pick
Woodstock’s secondary will be tested by North Springs’ spread looks, but this matchup also offers a valuable tune-up before region play begins. If Burmeister continues to distribute the ball efficiently and Murphy provides a steady ground threat, the Wolverines’ offense could wear down North Springs by the second half. The defensive front, which played with discipline and energy last week, will need to maintain gap integrity against a quarterback who can extend plays.
Prediction: While North Springs has athleticism and a few explosive weapons, Woodstock’s balance, depth, and quarterback play make them a heavy favorite. Expect the Wolverines to control the line of scrimmage and pull away late.
